Hoop buildings or, as we call them, hoop barns, are technically labeled Fabric Tension Buildings or Tensile Structures.These buildings are also sometimes called Membrane Structure Buildings or fabric/membrane arch buildings.

Our hoop barns consist of a heavy-duty steel frame with a sturdy plastic fabric canvas stretched tightly over them. Our hoop buildings have been painstakingly engineered to meet or exceed specific snow and wind loads. A hoop barn can be built much quicker and at less cost than a conventional barn and may also have taxation and depreciation advantages.

Hoop barns are typically the cheapest per square foot by about half of a finished pole shed.

Pole barn roofs, whether steel or shingles, have about the same useful life as a fabric roof. You can re-roof your fabric shed at way less than half the cost.

Wood rots faster than metal corrodes. It’s a no brainer for a lot of folks.

There are so many potential cost savings with a hoop shed over most conventional buildings that it’s hard to know where to start.

•  The cost of hoop buildings is far less than conventional barns or even pole barns. Hoop barn cost per square foot can be less than half of other buildings. 
• Construction cost of a hoop building is another big plus. Hoop barns, depending on size, can be erected in a matter of hours or, at most, days. Many people DIY hoop building construction. Putting up a hoop barn saves both time and $.
• Almost zero maintenance costs in time or money. Once erected the only maintenance necessary is occasionally checking cover tension. Twenty years down the road, when you may have to replace your cover, you’ll find that the cost to replace your whole building cover is about the same as replacing shingles or tin on a similar sized building but the labor cost is a mere fraction of other buildings.

Our hoopbarns are available in White, Blue, Green, Red, Sandstone, Grey, Silver, Brown, and Fog or combinations of these colors. Custom stripes are available free.

We use 4 feet as a “standard height” but that’s quite flexible. We recommend that you first decide what kind of clearance height you require and what building you need then it’s easy to decide how high you want to build your wall, i.e. if you have a 12′ tall building but need 18′ clearance, you need a 6′ wall.

You do need at least a 2′ wall to properly tension your cover however. We also do not recommend a pony wall higher than 8′ except in special circumstances.

Clear span is an architectural term used to define the open spaces between load bearing supports or posts. The spaced in a clear span building can be divided up with walls, but they don’t have to be, the outside structure can support its own weight.

It is easy for a small building to be a clear span building. It doesn’t take very strong walls to hold up the roof on a 20′ wide or even 40′ wide shed. When you get into much wider clear span buildings that are many times needed, many times lumber structures just can’t cut it. It generally requires very heavy steel to span long distances with no support.
